The Bulldog The First

Coffeeshop The Bulldog The First in Amsterdam

The Bulldog The First is one of the oldest coffeeshops in Amsterdam. They started out in 1975 in the basement of a sex shop, but quickly grew into a place where tourists would come to smoke weed.

The shop is named after the owner's dog Joris, which was a bulldog, and they pretended in the beginning to be a place where they would sell coffee. That however was just a front for the police, which quickly figured out that cannabis was being sold there.

In the beginning the shop would be raided a couple of times a day, but as policies towards softdrugs became more tollerant, they grew into one of the most popular coffeeshops in Amsterdam for tourists.

Today the shop is a comfortable place where you can smoke pot both upstairs and downstairs, there's a patio on the canal side, as well as a souvernir shop right next door.

A mould of the head Joris the bulldog is placed just above the enterance of the shop in memoriam of this beloved dog who they refer to as the true 'founder' of the shop.
