First new female mayor of Amsterdam invested in Red Light District brothel
Amsterdam finally has a new mayor. Femke Halsema from the liberal green left winged party GroenLinks has been voted mayor by the city council today. It took almost 9 months before a new mayor was found, after the passing of mayor Eberhard van der Laan in october 2017.
Femke Halsema is the first female mayor for Amsterdam, something many people had hinted at for more diversity. Femke Halsema is most well known for being the former party leader of GroenLinks for 8 years in the Dutch parliament.
Interesting fact about Femke Halsema regarding the Red Light District of Amsterdam, is that she’s always been a supporter of the legalisation of prostitution in parliament. It was with her vote that the brothel ban was lifted back in 2000 and prostitution became a completely legal profession.
But even more interesting is the fact that Femke Halsema is also in the board of NGO Start Foundation. Start Foundation was also the investor in My Red Light, the sex worker run brothel in the Red Light District of Amsterdam that opened up last year may to improve sex workers their position.
This means that the new mayor of Amsterdam is also an investor of a window brothel in the Red Light District. It just shows how open minded the Dutch can be!
